Book Description Lippincott,, Philadelphia:, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition, First Printing.. 327 pp. (including the appendices: useful tables, glossary, some French aeronautical terms, an aeronautical bibliography, index) illustrations, plates. 20 cm. Hardcover. Publisher's original red cloth over boards, gilt lettering to spine front cover with armorial gilt decoration to front cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Spine ends gently pushed, mild wear to extremites, some toning to covers, with hinges just starting; binding sound. Small sticker with "1910" on spine. Thirty two full page duotone plates, and 41 diagrams and charts. It's easy to forget that while the Wright brothers achieved controlled flight in a heavier than aircraft in 1903, those flights were very short; they didn't fly in a complete circle until 1904 and it wasn't until 1908 that they finally convinced skeptics in the U.S. and Europe that they had indeed achieved meaningful milestones of flight. By 1910 there were dozens, if not hundreds, of different aircraft and not only a "popular account of the evolution of Aeronautics" but a popular account with a bibliography! Ex-libris Philip O. Gravelle, with bookplate to front pastedown. Gravelle is known as the inventor of the comparison microscope contributing to a significant advance in the area of forensic science pertaining to firearms identification. From Gravelle's library to that of Robert Easton's (1930-2001). Easton had a long and successful career as a character actor in film and television though he was most widely known for the work he did as a "dialect coach to the stars". The headline of his New York Times obituary read: "Robert Easton, Hollywood's Henry Higgins, Dies at 81". Two nice associations. Seller Inventory # 003504
