Add to basketA scarce and early copy of this renowned collection of fables, by Samuel Croxall. Beautifully illustrated throughout, with many woodcuts throughout the text. Although the title page is absent, the dedication is dated 1723. Samuel Croxall was an Anglican churchman, writer and translator, particularly noted for this translation of Aesop's Fables. It is told in an easy colloquial style and followed by 'instructive applications'. Croxall aimed his work at children. Rebound in a speckled calf binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, rubbing to spine and extremities. Front board is held by the cords only. Rear hinge is slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound and bright. Some instances of light spotting and handling marks. Title page is absent. Paper repairs and some loss of text affecting dedication pages, and pages 197-202. Good Only.
