About this title

Synopsis:

Discusses the people, land, culture, history, and future of the nation of Afghanistan.

From Booklist:

Reviewed with William Goodwin's Pakistan .

Gr. 6-12. The Modern Nations of the World series continues with these two entries. As usual, the authors provide well-selected details and generally balanced treatment, looking at both the strengths and hardships affecting these countries that are so much in the news and so misunderstood. The authors work to dispel misconceptions about the day-to-day life, providing information on both packed cities and barren rural areas. In Afghanistan, the emphasis is on military activity, including a little about Osama bin Laden and the Taliban. There is also information on education, women, geography, history, religion, art, and culture. Pakistan concentrates mostly on the country's struggle for independence, with separate biographical sections on political and social leaders and their efforts to empower their country in ways previous leaders could not. Each book includes a "facts" section that encapsulates major information about each country, a chronology, and a list of further readings. Roger Leslie
