About this Item

This is an almost astonishingly well-preserved copy of a very scarce and original book. Many will recall Stephen Leacock's absurdist limericks and many humorous writings, but he was also a serious economist. Here are some comments on this "dual personality" from the rear of the DJ: "These 'Tales of the New Time' are not only laughable to the verge of tears but at the same time philosophical to the verge of perplexity. They are equally absurd as humour and sound as economics. In the tale called 'The Band of Brothers' we discover, beneath the fun, a serious indictment of communism. The series of tales entitled 'Grandfather goes to war' draw a contrast between the cheery, adventurous wars of the past and the horrors of the war of the near future." For the younger generation.the best story.is the one contrasting the College of Yesterday with the College of Tomorrow, and replacing the famous adventures of Tom Brown at Oxford by those of 'Tom Buncom' at Shucksford.'" Binding is clean and tight, bright orange boards with black letters, topstain; gift inscription from 1933 on ffep; prior bookmark left brown spot on pages 28-29, slight darkening to some pages. White background on DJ slightly soiled, small chip missing from top of spine, small spot on rear at bottom. Overall attractive copy considering age. Bookseller Inventory # 141071
