About this Item

First US edition, first printing (text in English). A fine book (full green cloth covers with a couple of tiny faded spots at the upper spine tip) with two dustjackets. The one next to the book has a small damp stain at the top left corner of the front panel, overlapping a bit onto the spine- mostly faint, and visible only from the exterior (not visible on the verso and with no effect whatsoever on the book). Otherwise, this jacket is very good with some edgewear - a few closed tears (longest about 1"), some shallow creases and a few faint spots. Over this jacket is a nicer one (probably from an ex-library copy), near fine with no real flaws other than a slight darkening of the lower spine end, where a label used to be. Otherwise fine - unclipped, unfaded, uncreased. On the half-title page is a blue ink inscription by the author in Yiddish (the author was at the time probably the foremost living Yiddish poet and novelist), but written in Hebrew script. I enlisted the help of an expert to translate the inscription into English: "For my dear Reuven Wolk, with friendship, Chaim Grade, New York, 1975". The translator of the inscription knew both the author and Mr. Wolk and was able to add this perspective to the inscription: Mr. Grade escaped from Stalinist Russia sometime in the 1940s, and eventually made his way to the US, where he was given hospitality by Reuven and Rivka Wolk, persons of some consequence and influence in the American Yiddish speaking community. The novel is somewhat scarce in jacket, but even more so with such a meaningful inscription. Photos on request. Bookseller Inventory # 2346
