About this title

Air Medal is the story of a young man and an American patriot from the farmlands of Minnesota. Jefferson Hartley was among the first to volunteer following the 1941 sneak attack on our fleets at Pearl Harbor. Hartley's wartime experiences were typical of the hundreds of thousands of young men who survived the horrors of four years of war. "February 25, 1945... The War Department regrets to inform you that your son, T/Sgt. Jefferson C. Hartley, has been reported Missing in Action, failing to return from a bombing raid over..."

A grateful nation rewarded these young men and women with an irrepayable gift, a college education. Jeff Hartley's was in the form of a PhD in microbiology. Following a series of arson attacks on historic landmarks across the nation, Hartley's sense of responsibility drives him to repay his country by using his technology to thwart a major subversive action whose specific objective was to hold the United States hostage until their demands are met. Failure to yield to these demands would lead to an explosion of a briefcase model atomic bomb at a major national sports event.

With the help of venerable Ken Parker, the mainstay of a small town newspaper, Hartley solves and neutralizes the mystery surrounding the game. Along the way Parker falls in love and Hartley finally understands the reason behind the 'Dear John' letter he received during the war. When the President of the United States encourages Hartley to share his technology with free-world security agencies, he replied: "If I do what the President asks, I will be the reason why an individual's right to privacy has been destroyed - I can't live with that." Hartley does succumb to an Air Force invitation to become involved in a fifty-year-old clandestine operation euphemistically called the Roswell Connection. The author gives the story a final and provocative twist.
