About this title

While waiting for his mother at the dentist's, Albert meets the Chairman of the Bored and journeys to the city of Tedium in the Kingdom of Boredom where he has an astonishing adventure.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-4 An imaginative fantasy about the power of an active imagination. Albert is left to entertain himself in a waiting room while his mother is seeing the dentist. He is boreduntil an old overstuffed arm chair is mysteriously transformed into an old man in a three-piece suit and glasses``the CHAIRMAN of the BORED.'' He leads Albert down ``the bored walk'' to the city of Tedium. The Chairman, it seems, brings children there, takes away all their remaining interest, and holds them captive with no possible escape from Boredom. Realizing he's been tricked, Albert is determined to find a way out. Not only does he save himself, but he gets the others' imaginations going and rescues them as well, turning the Chairman back into a stuffy old chair. Albert is hailed as a hero just as his mother comes to collect him. The message is a little heavy-handed at times, but overall this is a clever adventure story which, despite its picture book format, is geared to those children old enough to understand the plays on words and concepts (bank interest, Chairman of the Board, etc.). The cartoon-like pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations, while not distinguished, capture the humor and add to the fun. Perfect bibliotherapy for the chronically bored.Luann Toth, Summit Free Public Lib . , N.J.
