About this title

Synopsis:

Presents the life and accomplishments of the German scientist who established the theory of relativity and revolutionized the way people thought about gravity, energy, matter, light, and time.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 5-8–A clear, chronological look at Einstein's life and contributions with respect to gravity, energy, matter, light, and time. Lassieur describes her subject's family, difficulties in school, problems finding jobs, and recognition as a great scientist. Three chapters discuss his scientific theories and a fourth is devoted to the experimental support by other scientists that resulted in the physicist's international fame. The author uses many examples, including the development of the atomic bomb and nuclear energy, to show how the theories were later applied. She also discusses historical developments that affected Einstein's personal and professional decisions: the rise of German militarism and Nazism and his Jewish background influenced his pacifism and his decision to join the Zionist movement and to leave Germany for asylum in the U.S. Photo captions and sidebars provide further insights into this Noble Prize winner. Similar information for this age group can be found in John B. Severance's Einstein: Visionary Scientist (Clarion, 1999) and Fiona Macdonald's Albert Einstein: Genius Behind the Theory of Relativity (Blackbirch, 2000).–Ann Joslin, formerly at Erie County Public Library, PA
