About this Item

N.d., circa 1850. (With one separate item dated 1860.) 8vo. 20.5 by 16 cm. 52 pages with content, visual or textual -- not counting blank leaves or blank pages. Outstanding are the watercolors of ships, followed by several mounted watercolor caricature portraits. In all, there are sixteen watercolors, most of which are the only or the primary item on their pages. A number of these are framed by elaborate relief decoration in the paper. Of these, four watercolors feature ships, and there are four mounted sheets with broad caricatures in the vein of Hogarth, perhaps, but much later, with maybe a touch of George Moutard Woodward in their attitude. There are several other portraits, one of a monstrous looking man, and these are all carried out skillfully. In addition to the watercolors, there are five other pages with some sort of illustration, whether mounted cards, steel engravings, or a paper cut, as well as one separate card with a hand-colored bird, dated 1860. A good number of the illustrations relate to the poems alongside, or in the case of the mounted caricatures, on the same sheet. Notwithstanding this detail about the illustration, poetry actually dominates the album, with 34 separate poems (not counting the caricature captions alluded to above). Overall, the verse is highly proficient in the prevailing Romantic style of the period. The poems are of varied subjects -- flowers, the sea, death, poetry itself, etc. and there are two acrostics. A synopsis is inadequate for conveying their virtues or shortcomings. Two poems that stand out in terms of subejct matter are one entitled, "Lines on my child, who died at the age of three months," and a second, "On the Death of prostitute who commited [sic] suicide". The placement of the album's creation in Stockton, County Durham (north of Yorkshire) is based on a poem presumably written by John Moon at the age of 95. This is a place not far from the North Sea, and thus consistent with the numerous invocations of the sea in the pictures and verse. Contemporary elaborate blindstamped decoration to the morocco boards. Abrasions, scuffing, cracking along joints repaired -- overall moderate to heavy-ish wear to this leather. New endpapers. Moderate soiling and some grubbiness to the text pages -- a few leaves look as if they suffered smoke damage in the margins. Bookseller Inventory # 003417

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
