About this Item

N.d., circa 1890. 4to. 31.5 by 24 cm. 75 leaves, with chromolithographic plates, cards, die-cuts or the like mounted on virtually all the rectos and some fo the versos. The purpose of this album would appear to have been to serve as a salesman's catalogue of some sort. We compiler we presume was C. Vessolofski, a name embossed in gilt on the spine, and this might have been an individual, a business name, or of course, both. Many of the prints are German, or have German text, with some in English, and a few even in Polish, and clearly, the prints were from many sources. Our best conjecture is that Vessolofski then might have acted as a middleman who would customize the prints for advertising and promotional purposes of the client business, similar to the way trade card salesmen operated in the U.S. or the U.K. In one instance the same image is represented in two different sizes, and one with a promotion in English, the other, in Polish, and this would appear to corroborate loosely our conjecture. In any event, this is a diverse, interesting collection of chromolithographs, many of which are nearly the size of the card leaf onto which they are mounted, and these are usually works of art. Most of these also carry captions with the title and artist's name. The subject matter of the chromos can be genre scenes, sporting scenes, cheesecake portraits (there is one of Lillian Russell), holiday-oriented, humorous or serious. Some of the card leaves have heavy-ish age toning, and a few are foxed. Some of the leaves are also detached. Generally the chromos are themselves well-preserved, and the binding itself is handsome, with its blindstamped Renaissance Revival aesthetic. Bookseller Inventory # 004644

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
