Synopsis: An examination of why particular alcohol and drug treatment methods work for some people but not for others. An independent evaluation of an Alcohol Treatment Centre based on the disease model (AA and Minnesota), indicates that individual differences are an important variable in treatment outcome and particularly differences in personal beliefs. This study explores the possibility that people showing similar behaviour, but attaching different meanings to it, will respond differently to treatment. In practical terms, effective helping may depend on the availability of theories and methods of helping which are not inconsistent with the clients' own conception of the problem. This volume is suitable for the practical use of drug/alcohol specialists and generic professionals within health care and social work. It is also of academic interest to social scientists and those concerned with social policy.
