Combine the ancient practice of hatha yoga with the shapes and mystical meanings of the Hebrew letters to enhance your physical health and deepen your spiritual life.
This unique guide shows both the yoga enthusiast and the yoga novice how to use hatha yoga postures and techniques to physically connect with Jewish spirituality.
"If you are curious about hatha yoga, Aleph-Bet Yoga provides a safe introduction to the basic yoga postures and techniques. If you are one of the tens of thousands of Jews who already practice hatha yoga, Aleph-Bet Yoga will connect your yoga to something explicitly Jewish. With its Jewish content and intent, Aleph-Bet Yoga will enhance rather than interfere with your religious identity."
―from the Introduction
As we move our bodies through the Hebrew aleph-bet, turning toward the inner meaning of the letters, we can tap into the deep connections between our body, mind and spirit.
Drawing on the sacred texts and mystical writings of Judaism, combined with the insights of yoga teacher Steven Rapp, Aleph-Bet Yoga is an East-meets-West experience for our whole selves.
Aleph-Bet Yoga makes it easy for anyone to incorporate yoga into their life, and combines the physical and spiritual aspects of Judaism. It features step-by-step instructions, photographs clearly demonstrating each yoga pose, and insightful words to inspire and guide us in connecting the spiritual meaning of the Hebrew letters to our yoga practice.
From the Author: By combining yoga movements, poems, and spiritual phrases, I have tried to reach beneath the superficial meaning of the English, Hebrew, and Sanskrit words to find a place where East and West may have met long ago.
Over the past decade, I have met many other Jews who regularly practice yoga. And many, like me, have always wanted to give their hatha yoga practice a Jewish context. Many of us have seen that hatha yoga can help us to stay healthy and to defend themselves against the stresses of modern life. But many have also seen that yoga can open our spiritual and intuitive channels as well, providing an increased sense of presence in relationships with people and in our experience of God. Many feel as I do that yoga has deepened their Judaism and their sense of purpose in this world.
Aleph-Bet Yoga is meant to serve as a bridge between the physical body and the spiritual and intellectual aspects of Judaism. Aleph-Bet Yoga introduces Jews to a means of caring for their bodies so that so that they can act more effectively to make the world a better place. In other words, Aleph-Bet Yoga can prepare us - body, mind, and spirit, for the work of tikkun olam, the Jewish tenet of repairing the world. As a bridge, Aleph-Bet Yoga can optimize our bodies with yoga while focusing our intention on the inner meanings of the Hebrew letters. In this way, Aleph-Bet Yoga provides a method to connect our whole selves with the Hebrew language and Jewish philosophy, to feel connected to the letters and the language in a way that simply reading or writing cannot. At the same time, the Hebrew phrases and poems in Aleph-Bet Yoga provide Jewish philosophical reference point to the yoga postures in order to give a sense of the familiar while remaining true to the universal goal of yoga – connecting with God.
