About this Item

A superb set of the author's 4-volume literary landmark. Here offered: four First Impressions (no additional printings noted), all about Fine, uniformly bound in publisher's cloth, in correct illustrated dust jackets. 8vo: 253,[1]; 250; 320; 287,[1]pp. Justine (1957): rose-colored cloth, spine gilt, French blue title block. Near Fine, with dust-soiled edges, spine slightly faded, unobtrusive glue stain along two edges of lower paste-down; about Fine jacket, priced 15s, barely toned to spine panel, else quite fresh and bright. Balthazar (1958): French blue cloth, spine gilt, reddish-brown title block. Fine, tight and apparently unread, marred only by owner's signature and date to front paste-down; about Fine jacket, priced 15s, with two short closed tears along upper spine-panel folds. Mountolive (1958): yellow cloth, spine gilt, lavender title block. About Fine, tight and apparently unread, with owner's inscription on front fly leaf, dust-soiled top edge, two lightly bumped corners; Fine jacket, priced 16s. Clea (1960): persimmon cloth, spine gilt, green title block. Fine, square and tight with lightly dust-soiled top edge; better than Near Fine jacket (priced-clipped), lightly dust-soiled and rubbed to ends of spine-panel. Burgess 99. Modern Library 100, 70. Durrell's magnum opus, chronicling the lives of British expatriates in Egyptbetween the two world wars. "The Alexandria Quartet is one of those works that seem to draw upon and sum up a multitude of works and writers and bodies of knowledge that have come before. Sources specific to Egypt include Constantine Cavafy's poetry and E. M. Forster's Alexandria: A History and a Guide. Other sources range from The Arabian Nights to accounts of the life of occult philosopher Paracelsus, from the obsessive erotic catalogues of the Marquis de Sade (who wrote his own Justine and who provides three of the volumes with epigraphs) to the thrillers of John Buchan. Freud is here (providing a psychological framework and yet another epigraph), as well as his student Georg Groddeck. Durrell also utilizes Einstein's theory of relativity, recounting the same events from multiple viewpoints within the first three volumes, then advancing the characters and situations through the fourth dimension, time, in the fourth and final volume. . . . Whatever the merits of the works his contemporaries were producing in the 1950s, most of those seemed cautious and provincial compared to Durrell's unabashedly romantic and experimental novels."
