About this Item

First Printing. A Fine copy in red cloth, in a Near Fine red, black and white dustwrapper, not price-clipped, unfaded, with several small closed tears. 363pp. Contributors include Ray Bradbury, Gerald Kersh, Dorothy L. Sayers, Carter Dickson, Frederic Brown, Ellis Peters, etc. From 1955 to 1965, Hitchcock was the host of the television series titled Alfred Hitchcock Presents. While his films had made Hitchcock's name strongly associated with suspense, the TV series made Hitchcock a celebrity himself. His irony-tinged voice and signature droll delivery, gallows humor, iconic image and mannerisms became instantly recognizable and were often the subject of parody. The title-sequence of the show pictured a minimalist caricature of Hitchcock's profile (he drew it himself; it is composed of only nine strokes), which his real silhouette then filled. His introductions before the stories in his program always included some sort of wry humor, such as the description of a recent multi-person execution hampered by having only one electric chair, while two are now shown with a sign "Two chairs waiting!" He directed 18 episodes of the TV series himself, which aired from 1955 to 1965 in two versions. It became The Alfred Hitchcock Hour in 1962. The series theme tune was Funeral March of a Marionette, by the French composer Charles Gounod (18181893), the composer of the 1859 opera Faust. This collection was an obvious exploitation of the television connection. Q09002. Bookseller Inventory # Q09002
