Born and raised in Havana, Alonso sailed to New York at age 15 and eventually perfected a style that brought her to the forefront of American dance. In her late teen sher eyesight began to deteriorate but despite doctors' cautions continued to perform. She returne dto Cuba and helped establish the Ballet Nacionial de Cuba.
