About this Item

A scarce, absurdistly comical ABC in a mid-Victorian style evocative of Edward Lear, Richard Doyle and John Tenniel. N.d., circa 1850s. Oblong, 18 by 23 cm. Only one copy located on OCLC, at Princeton University (the Cotsen Collection). With 27 line drawn engravings, one for each letter plus a title page, mounted onto heavy card, mostly on the rectos, with a few on the versos as well. The drawings could pass as ink manuscript, but they were in fact printed in what would seem an early form of mimeographic technology. Characterizing virtually all the figures, besides the stock-in-trade of the caricaturist's art of exaggerated features, is their enormous heads. Angels, devils, fairies, wizards, crones, lovely Medieval maidens and many others in ancient and fairy tale dress fill these pages. None of the illustrations will fail to charm, and while the captions are part of the fun, they are not a sine qua non for the enjoyment of the ludicrous imagery. The original cloth has soiling and light wear. The hinges have been restored. Light soiling scattered on the mounted images. Marks left by paste are visible on the backs of leaves. Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
