About this Item

Oblong, 19 by 26 cm. Unpaginated. 24 leaves, each of a glossy card stock, plus tissue guards with humorous captions. A most colorful send-up of the pretensions and excesses of the Gilded Age New York 400, the creation of Ward McAllistar, whose book "Society as I Have Found It" can be espied from the window of a gilded coach near the beginning. The pageantry is filled with caricatures of some of its members such as J. J. Astor, Charles Dana, etc. Many of the faces may be obscure and forgotten today, but this hardly matters for an appreciation of the satire and amusement. Following three colorful pages each serving as a title (would it be title, half-title and then quarter-title?), a page with apocryphal coats-of-arms, following by three double sided illustrations of a circus parade. With these pages the tissue is attached above and is lifted vertically. Following come various circus acts, the captions written like an abbreviated circus master's announcements, poking fun of the various activities of the moneyed set -- polo, opera going, balls, courting. The final leaf is a short listing of Harper Brother's publications. Printed with a chromotypographic process, the color throughout is bright and infectious. Very clean within. The silk moire cloth is tattered or worn through along the edges and spine extremities. Tears repaired by the latter. Bookseller Inventory # 003799

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
