About this title

This hardcover 12-by-12-inch exhibition catalogue features full-page color illustrations of all 90 works in the exhibition of the same title (September 29, 2007 - January 6, 2008), organized by Paul Manoguerra, curator of American art at the Georgia Museum of Art, as well as essays by Carl Mullis, the collector, and Carol Crown, professor of art history at the University of Memphis. Biographies of all the artists, from Howard Finster and R.A. Miller to Sister Gertrude Morgan and Mary T. Smith, by Paul Manoguerra, follow the exhibition catalogue section.

This colorful catalogue was published to complement an exhibit by the same name that wrapped up earlier this year at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens. It is worth browsing even with the show's 90 pieces having returned to collectors Carl and Marion "Babe" Mullis of Atlanta. Works by acknowledged folk masters Thornton Dial, Mose Tolliver, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, and Sister Gertrude Morgan share the spotlight with lesser-known talents from all across the South. Georgians in the mix include Alpha Andrews, Ned Cartledge, Ulysses Davis, Howard Finster, Willie Jinks, and Nellie Mae Rowe. Turn pages to discover oil-on-canvas angels witnessing the baptism of Jesus; a crayon-on-paper dog crossing a road; an enamel-on-plywood image of Otis Redding sitting on the dock; and more. Carved wooden critters, a handwoven basket, a stoneware face jug, a fish-clutching sandstone bear, bent-metal figurines, and other surprises await. --Southern Living (August 2008)
