From the Author:
What fun this was to write! It is set in the year 2165 and George Fred Fiddlington lives in the rich end of town called The Calipso Towers. That's because George is a million-billion-trillionaire. He can afford anything. In fact, George is so rich that he lives in a boat that has been raised up high into the sky by mammoth stilts.
George became very successful at a very young age with his incredible inventions. But, that was a long time ago now and being high in the sky in his boat-home has allowed George to lose touch with the people and his many businesses. Thank goodness he has his niece and nephew, Butterfield and Freddie, to help him because what George doesn't know is that his world is about to come crashing down - all the way to the ground.
GEORGE FRED FIDDLINGTON THE FIRST
When George Fred Fiddlington became rich he was quite surprised. When he became even richer he was even more surprised. At the age of fifteen George invented a small device called the 'George Fred Fiddlington Weather Force Fighter'. He couldn't believe it hadn't been invented before. The 'George Fred Fiddlington Weather Force Fighter' was a small instrument that produced a transparent bubble around the entire person. The bubble protected them from any kind of weather and any kind of disagreeable temperatures: It was like a sunscreen, an overcoat and an umbrella all at once. Plus, the device was small and could be carried in a pocket. It was an instant success.
By the age of sixteen he was traveling the world in the most luxurious airpods ever invented. His favorite was the EPLOD in the Starr 5 series. It was gold-plated on the outside making it the smoothest ride off all. Inside, the large plush pod chairs were covered with the finest synthetic materials specially imported from New China. The view-dome was made of very thin, highly pressed mylar, which made it feel like you were flying through the skies with nothing between you and the clouds. All the Starr 5 series had reproducers which made really delicious synthis-juice (George's favorite), and could also perfectly replicate e-motion capsules - they helped stop his motion sickness and made him feel perfectly safe. In the early days George did suffer terribly from motion sickness but they were the days before he built his empire in the sky. The thought of that young boy made him laugh. 'How young,' he thought, 'How inexperienced.' Now of course, George owned an entire fleet of the new Starr 17 series airpods. His favorite was the small one with the rose-gold exterior and enough seating for just him and his nephew and niece.
George adored his nephew and niece and gave them whatever they wanted and sometimes, things they didn't particularly want. Once, George found out that his nephew, Freddie Junior, was keeping the baby water-dragon George had given him, in the bathtub at home. This had caused all sorts of problems in the household and Freddie Junior's father, George's brother, had ordered the water-dragon back to George's Katnook Island Zoo. Freddie Junior was brokenhearted for quite a while, even when George tried to explain to him that the water-dragon could grow to be twenty times the bathtub he was trying to keep him in. And so, George ended up promising Freddie that he could visit the water-dragon whenever he wanted to. The only problem with that promise was that Freddie often woke up in the middle of the night wanting his uncle to take him to see his favorite swimming dragon. Which of course George did until Freddie's father put a stop to that too.
George Fred Fiddlington was the finest inventor of his time. He also had an amazing talent for predicting the latest trends. These two abilities allowed him to lead an extraordinary life; a life he was very grateful for. But these days much of George's time was spent high up in the sky in his sky-boat which had been raised up on huge stilts. Here, perched in the blue drift, he watched the world move around him like busy ants and, by midday, while George was indulging in his favorite prawn sandwiches, his sky-boat was casting a huge shadow across the surrounding Calipso Towers. But George always managed to look out toward the sunny side, wondering why people would want to live in such a shadowy area.
The sky-boat he called home was in a zone called the Calispo Tower Range which George designed himself - yes, the sky-boat and the Calipso Towers. They were the first Stilt-Buildings and they caused a huge surge in architectural innovation. Many people often wondered if George was just too clever for his own good.
George's niece and nephew, Butterfield and Freddie Junior, often visited their uncle and sometimes got to stay with him for several days. The cousins enjoyed each other's company but did have the odd fight, especially about which of them was Uncle George's favorite.
George loved it when they came to stay on his sky-boat, high above everyone else, where they would watch the oceans and crowded roads swarm below them and gaze at the many airpods zooming around in the clear blue sky.
And of course, he loved giving them presents. He always gave people incredible gifts but had no idea it made some of them feel uncomfortable. There was no way any of George's friends could ever return presents of the same value. But George had worked very hard for his money and he always thought it was wonderful to be able to spend it on people that deserved rewards. He had no idea that it made some people feel uneasy.
Although George didn't work very hard now, he remembered all the years of working 18 hours a day, usually 7 days a week, and now took full advantage of enjoying his freedom. These days, George had a lot of people do all the hard work for him and he had almost forgotten what his many factories and companies looked like.
On this particular day, one thought occurred to him and it was quite a brainfull.
He owned everything except a seamonster.
