About this Item

First Edition. First issue (without Index). Pages 355. pp.8vo. Tan cloth covered spine with brown paper covered boards. T.e.g. Printed paper title label on spine. Scarce errata slip bound at pp. 268/9. First Edition. First issue (without Index). Copiously illustrated. Colored caricature of Dickens and Thackeray as frontispiece, with tissue guard. A very nice copy of one of the fundamental books on book collecting by the very knowledgeable, but bigoted doyen of early 20th century collectors. This book is Newton's first book on book collecting and literay affectations. Tucked in are two pieces of important ephemera dating from 1918: (1) a Christmas card, an unsigned photograph labeled "Christmas Greetings from Dana's Beach (? the shore of Cape Ann, Massachusetts). Richard Henry Dana. 1918." (2) a bookmark labeled "A German Naval 'Victory'' " with an illustration of the two faces of a German medal. Printed on the bookmark is the following: "This medal was struck in Germany to commemorate the glorious exploit of the German Navy in deliberately sinking an unarmed passenger boat, the Lusitania, and taking the lives of 1,198 innocent passengers, men, women, and children." Newton was a distinguished book collector. He famously owned the only copy of the First Edition of Dickens' "Mystery of Edwin Drood" with a dust jacket, then thought to be the first book issued in a dust jacket. The fate of this dust jacket since the dissipation of Newton's collection is unknown. Spine browned and lightly spotted. Corners lightly bumped. Else, a very tight, clean copy.
