About this title

Synopsis:

From the birth of photography in 1839 to the dawn of the 21st century, here are over 1,000 incredible photographs of life and personalities in the United States. Decade-by-decade, here are the people, known and unknown, who have shaped the country. Here also are extraordinary images of the breadth and beauty of the land that has defined us as a people and a nation. Offering 1,024 pages, this unprecedented and comprehensive work is the first book of photographs to focus solely on that which is truly worthy of celebration - our accomplishments, our joys, our triumphs, our natural and man-made wonders. America! A Celebration covers the entire range of the country's most important vintage and contemporary photography - from works by pioneer landscape photographers Timothy O'Sullivan, Carleton Watkins, and William Henry Jackson to 20th century masters such as Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, Dorothea Lange, Jacob Riis, Weegee, Lewis Hine, Slim Aarons, Marion Post Walcott, and Ernst Haas. Featuring photographs drawn from Getty Images, one of the world's greatest libraries of illustrative material; a foreword by Walter Cronkite; and fascinating narrative commentary on each photograph by prestigious photohistorian Martin W. Sandler, America: A Celebration! is an uplifting journey into the American experience.
