About this title

This work analyzes a variety of images of China including media such as published and unpublished travelogues, newspaper accounts, artifacts, photographs, official diplomatic reports as well as perceptions through art, commerce, and missionaries. Illustrated.

From Library Journal:

More than a dozen contributors provide selective accounts of American images of China from the 1700s through the 1980s. Initially the merchants idealized China through her arts, and then the missionaries saw Chinese as heathens to be saved. By the 1920s, America's images of China took the forms of Dr. Fu Manchu and Charlie Chan, supplemented by the journalistic perceptions of Carl Crow and Edgar Snow. The contemporary images contain some first-hand observations, with initial glorification and subsequent disdain, thus continuing the pattern of vacillation. American images of China tended to swing from one extreme to the other, not only because China was changing but even more because of our changing moods. For larger collections.
