About this title

An appraisal of urban America written by Pulitzer-Prize winner Paul Gapp (1928-1992) and published by the Chicago Tribune. As most people visit American cities as tourists or business travelers, and return home with sketchy and stereotyped impressions, the Chicago Tribune took up the mission of surveying 11 major United States cities, to cut through the confusion and to produce a series of sharply drawn, lively, and lucid articles on urban American as it entered the 1980s. The eleven cities include Chicago, New York, Denver, Atlanta, Kansas City, Boston, Columbus, Houston, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Portland. Gapp was a Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic for the Chicago Tribune. He won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1979.
