About this Item

First edition. Pages 14 pp.8vo. Cloth spine and blue-green paper covered boards. Cover illustration after that on parts issue of" David Copperfield." First edition. No. 16 of an edition limites to 150 copies. Podeschi H489. Three Facsimile Reproductions, including a letter from Dickens and one from Washington Irving, both to Dr. Elisha Bartlett. Bartlett (1804-55), a Quaker physician who had graduated from the Brown University Medical School in 1826, 2 years before its closing, was later mayor of Lowell, where Dickens, famously, visited in 1842. They became somewhat friendly, as Bartlett seemed unperturbed by Dickens intense criticism of America. Among his other works, Bartlett wrote "Simple Settings, in Verse, for six Portraits and Pictures, from Mr. Dickens's Gallery." Bartlett was a great teacher at many medical schools, including Transylvania University in Kentucky, the first medical school west of the Alleghanies. Among many other works, Bartlett wrote an important early history of fevers in the United States. In applying deductive reasoning to medical problems, he was much admired by Osler. His death at 50 was from a nervous disorder suggestive to this observer of ALS ("Lou Gherig's Disease"). Minor chips at head of edges. Else, Very Good . Bookseller Inventory # 5833
