About this Item

First edition. Pulp publication, 12mo. in color illustrated wrap-around wrappers featuring a play at second base and ornately designed borders featuring 19th century catcher's mask, fingerless gloves, crossed bats. 64 pp. Wood engraving portrait of Chadwick and diagrams of a ball field. A tight, cleam example, with just very minor chipping at the tips and spine ends, one of the nicest copies were have encountered in over 40 years involvement with baseball books. Baseball history, rules and playing instructions by the "Father of Baseball", Hall of Famer and first American sportswriter, Henry Chadwick. Among many accomplishments, Chadwick is credited with inventing the boxscore, scoring rules and was the major journalistic proponent of the game from it's pre-professional infancy through the early 20th century. Interestingly, the final ten pages of the book deal with lotteries, specifically advertising the Louisiana Lottery. Bookseller Inventory # E13759
