First edition, the inaugural volume of the oldest mathematics journal in continuous publication in the western world. Contents include two articles by W.K. Clifford and a book review by C.S. Peirce (please see images for the full table of contents). The founding editor was the English mathematician J.J. Sylvester (1814-97), at this time professor of mathematics at the new Johns Hopkins University. In 1883 he returned to England to take up the Savilian Professorship of Geometry at Oxford University. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Quarto [305 x 240 mm] with wide margins, vii, 388 pp., original printed stiff paper cover, somewhat marked and spotted and with a nick to the front outer edge, plain spine titled in pencil, internally very clean, a well-preserved copy.
