About this Item

viii, 520p, illustrations. 28cm. Bound in textured blue cloth with tiling in gilt on the spine. Spine ends worn, corners bumped, skinned; foxing; still, in very good condition. The American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge was first published by The Boston Bewick Company in September, 1834, and ran for three years till September of 1837. In March, 1836, Nathaniel Hawthorne became editor. Several of his stories appeared in the pages of this magazine. Also of interest is an article on page 5 of the September, 1835, issue on "The Whale, and Whale Catching," which "for this article we are indebted to a sturdy, but well educated young man of Massachusetts, who had been a whaling voyage -- thus we entered on no criticism, or addition. Its description could not be mended, and its freshness might be injured, by any attempts at explanation." [underlining in pen]. Bookseller Inventory # 19781
