Large Octavo. Third edition, frontispiece, engraved title page and regular title page, 2 vols. in 1 with additional biographical sketch of author at end. 682 pages in all. Mammals are shown including the American Buffalo, Grizzly Bear, etc with early drawings of Mastadons, etc. This is considered the best edition and essential for understanding the scientific knowledge of mammals in the period just before the American Civil War. This edition ads Godman's last work entitled "The rambles of a naturalist" and includes a biographical sketch of the author. light dampstain on outside of plates and some toning but no marks other than a few dates at paragraphs where the owner noted discoveries of various species. Small stamp "E. Lewis, Brooklyn" then written above his full name of owner "Elias Lewis, Brooklyn". While Elias Lewis (1820-1894) was famous for his writings on slavery from a Quaker point of view, he was also a careful student of natural history and photography. A good copy bound in maroon buckram, spine lettering gilt, endpapers renewed. Bookseller Inventory # 012945
