NAACP. white supremacy. ~ The Americanization of Dixie and the Southernization of America are homogenizing processes that are full of contradiction and ambiguity and paradox, but taken as a whole, they say more about fear and failure and estrangement in American society than they do about hope and achievement and reconciliation. The South and the nation are not exchanging strengths as much as they are exchanging sins; more often than not, they are sharing and spreading the worst in each other, while the best languishes and withers. The South is rejoining the Union, and John Egerton is all for that. It is not the fact of reunion that concerns him, but the form of it, which he sees as an amalgamation of regions that perpetuates and spreads the banal and the venal while it melts the great and valuable diversity of America into a homogenized puree. The signs are everywhere: television and computer technology, jetports and interstate highways, agribusiness and industrial conglomerates, mass culture and decaying cities, de facto segregation and the political Southern strategy. Diversity is America's most valuable possession, and equality its loftiest ideal. But Americans have tended to perceive of diversity and equality as being mutually exclusive. Being different has meant being better or worse. In the Americanization of Dixie~and the Southernization of America~the South and the nation seem intent on imitating the worst in each other, exporting vices without importing virtues, failing to assure a spiritual or culturaro~social balance of payments. Egerton examines the changing relationship between his native South and his native country, and he concludes that the South is well on its way to a surrender of its distinctiveness, to amalgamation in the nation, at a time when the nation is still groping, after 200 years, for a society in harmony with the principles on which it was founded. Without attaining equality, it is destroyig diversity. Bookseller Inventory # 5201401
