About this Item

Amphibious Warfare and Combined Operations. Admiral of the Fleet the Lord Keyes. New York: Cambridge, 1943. 101 pages. HC Good DJ Good. These are the 1943 Lee Knowles Lectures given at Cambridge. Keyes was the original Director of Combined Operations for the British and had personal experience as a naval landing force commander in the Dardanelles and during the raid on the Belgian Coast in 1918 in which the harbor and locks of Zeebrugge were blocked. He gives commentary on historical operations beginning with the St. Lawrence landings of General Wolfe in 1759, the China Expeditions during the Boxer Uprising in 1900, the Gallipoli Campaign of which he was a major player, and his planning and leadership of the Belgian coastal raid. He preceded Lord Louis Mountbatten at Combined Operations and developed landing craft and techniques that would be instrumental in the Mediterranean and European landings.
