Book Description New York, Toronto, London: D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., 1948., 1948. AUTHOR'S PERSONAL COPY. First edition (not stated). xiv, 433 pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.5cm. Lacks dust jacket. Blue cloth obtrusively stained with surface abrasion; flaked loss to gilt decoration and publisher's imprint upon spine but with brown title block and its gilt title and author name mostly intact and legible, front board's brown lettering legible, board corners worn. Edges toned. Handwritten in tight ink script on front pastedown is three-line inscription "Property of: | H.S. Wall | Jan. 4, 1949" followed by two-line ink stamp "2903 Breeze Ter. | Austin, Texas." Two-line inscription "120 Alexander St | Princeton N.J." (which was street address for D. Van Nostrand Company's Princeton office) at bottom of title page but written in a larger cursive style with quite different letter formation than Wall's writing on pastedown. Laid-in between pages 354-355 is March 1968 typed letter signed by Alexander S. Elder on U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratories stationery pointing out an error in a formula on page 345. Scattered throughout book are sheets, variously tipped-in at margins or glued over the underlying book page, featuring mostly type-written text, notes, formulas, etc. presumably as amendments and emendations. Occasional pencil and ink corrections/marginalia too both on book's pages and on the aforementioned sheets; extended ink notes on rear pastedown. Binding shows some stress but still reasonably firm. Only a fair copy per its exterior cosmetics. Acquired from the estate of Dr. Russell Aubrey Stokes (1922-2014) who earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1963 from UT-Austin under the tutelage of Hubert Stanley Wall. Stokes taught math for many years at the University of Mississippi where he established the department's doctoral program and was appointed professor emeritus. OCLC shows a number of later reprints for Wall's ANALYTIC THEORY OF CONTINUED FRACTIONS but apparently all have the same 433 page total so perhaps none of the corrections/additions made it into a new edition. It is possible that the sheets are not Professor Wall's work but rather that of Dr. Stokes (or perhaps even someone else) but, upon examining several hundred books at the Stokes' household, the Ole Miss educator manifested extreme minimalism at marking his books (occasional ownership signatures or inscriptions at the most). So, with the front pastedown inscription and the Elder letter indicating that the book was likely still in the possession of H.S. Wall into 1968, it seems safe to attribute the additions to the famed University of Wisconsin-educated mathematician who started teaching at University of Texas in 1946 and was appointed emeritus professor in 1970 just the year preceding his death.
