Original brown leather, ruled with decoration, gilt rules and lettering to the spine, marbled endpapers and textblock, pictorial title page from the eighth edition in Volume I followed by the text title page, separate title page in Volume II, 10-page index (headed "The Table") at the end of Volume II. Overall both volumes in good condition; they both have square, solid text blocks, bindings, with normal age-toning and light foxing. A 1909 clipping from Scribner's catalogue is affixed to the ffep of Vol 1. The leather boards have some chipping and the corners, edges are frayed. A rare set of this important work.
