About this title

Synopsis:

Briefly traces the early history of China, which enjoyed a period of great creativity under the T'ang and Sung dynasties

From School Library Journal:

ea. vol: illus. by Hal Frenck. 29p. (Venture into Reading Series). CIP. Troll. July 1985. PLB $7.59; pap. $1.95. Grade 3-5 Fragmentary information is presented about four ancient civilizations. The format is uniform: large print text and muddy watercolor illustrations. Each volume includes history, architectural landmarks and legends, but the emphasis varies. Ancient Greece attempts to address the legacy of Greek civilization. The four pages spent on the legends of the Minotaur and Troy are unclear and do not contribute to the text. Ancient Rome attributes Rome's accomplishments to the strong Roman character. So many historical details are left out that the information is almost inaccurate, as in the description of the assassination of Caesar. Ancient China is the least successful. The text is disjointed, and the glowing interpretation of social conditions is subjective. A disproportionate four pages is devoted to the Great Wall. Ancient Egypt is the most serviceable, with flowing text centering on the importance of the Nile to Egypt's history and culture. All four books attempt to cover too many centuries in too few words. With the exception of Ancient Egypt, the result is a hodgepodge of fact and fable. Marguerite F. Raybould, Glendale Public Library, Calif.
