"Lowland Maya sculpture, which underwent spectacular developments during the first millennium AD, constitures one of the great art styles of ancient America. Complexities of style, degrees of wethering, and problems of effective field photography make many of the Maya monuments difficult to appreciate or study in satisfactory detail. The intricate carving of the magnificent sarcophagus from the Tomb of the Inscriptions at Palenque is a case in point.
