About this Item

Foreword by Brian Davis. Illustrated by Alan James Robinson. (Easthampton): ABCedary Letterpress, 1989. Folio, beautifully bound by Sarah Creighton in heavy paper covers handmade by Timothy Barrett, with a cut-away window on the front cover, framed in gold and exposing a wood engraving of a Harp Seal pup. The pages are hand-sewn over exposed vellum laces. 68 pages, printed letterpress in Centaur and Arrighi types on handmade T.H. Saunders paper. Presswork for the text and wood engravings by Harold McGrath. Illustrated with eleven full-page etchings and four wood engravings by Alan James Robinson. The etchings were printed by Sara Krohn on Rives BFK handmade paper, with sky-blue Japanese Moriki paper facing each etching. ONE OF ONLY 26 NUMBERED COPIES, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND ARTIST. Enclosed in a linen-silk tray case.THE BOOK IS MINT, the slip case is very lightly sunned on spine. THIS COPY INCLUDES THE PROSPECTUS. The text is an original narrative about the Harp Seal and the Magdalen Islands. The story employs three voices to explore the confrontations between man and animal, man and man, man and the environment, and man and himself. Prose is used for the human voice, free verse for the thoughts of the mother seal and stream of consciousness for the feelings of the seal pup. An artistic tour de force that is the first publication of the ABCedary Letterpress, a joint venture of Alan James Robinson (i.e., Cheloniidae Press) and Mark Philip Carol.
