About this title:

Synopsis: The idea behind Andrew Marvell's "Upon Appleton House: An Analytic Commentary", is the recognition of Marvell's poem as, line-for-line, perhaps the most aesthetically eventful, unobtrusively playful and undemandingly complex long poem of the English Renaissance - as, quite possibly, the most spectacular and sustained example of wit in the English language. The author believes that the artistic density of the poem calls for a line-by-line annotation that addresses, on the one hand, the poem's protean internal coherences and, on the other, the probable reading experience of the poem - both that of its original audience and of us today. Thus, this commentary not only glosses the text, but tries to capture the poem as it occurs in the minds of its readers.

About the Author: Vitaliy Eyber received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.

Book Description Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, Madison, 2009. Hardback/Cloth. Condition: New. 1st Edition. 256pp Illustrated. [In stock in Australia, for immediate delivery] The idea behind Andrew Marvell's’Upon Appleton House’: An Analytic Commentary, is the recognition of Marvell's poem as, line-for-line, perhaps the most aesthetically eventful, unobtrusively playful and undemandingly complex long poem of the English Renaissance - as, quite possibly, the most spectacular and sustained example of wit in the English language. The commentary attempts both to annotate the words on the page and take note of the usually effortless gymnastics that readers' minds enact when dealing with the poem's games and paradoxes, its playful casuistry, its multiple harmonies at the confluence of the notional and the phonic. While this edition does all the work a scholarly annotation is expected to do, it is particularly concerned with accomplishing what has been largely overlooked by previous Marvell scholarship: laying bare every instance of the poem's dynamic wit. In doing so, the commentary consistently alerts its readers to such, for the most part, non-interpretive, aspects of poetry as associative connections operating on the periphery of one's conscious experience, palpable or merely hinted-at word-play, coexisting multiple syntaxes, and patterns of formal and informal phonic coherence. In a critical climate that is dominated by argument-driven criticism that tends to relegate’close reading' to the status of a venerated, but often misunderstood and abused concept, this commentary, Eyber hopes, can not only be the most comprehensive study of the aesthetics of Marvell's masterpiece, but, perhaps, also an instrument that might help readers of poetry toward a fresh understanding of wit and poetics in general. Vitaliy Eyber received his PhD in 2008 from the University of California. This is his first book. Seller Inventory # 7756
