Synopsis: The Joy of Acting is a textbook of exercises, carefully selected and progressing from the elementary to the more difficult, for the use of teachers of acting, directors (in studio work) and individual actorbeginners. This is material which the author found most effective in his years of teaching actors in New York City. The principles of psychology on which the Stanislavsky system is based are closely followed: hence the book provides an excellent text-manual to supplement an Actor Prepares. In an introduction, the author dicusses the problems of the artist in the theatre, and the ideal collaboration of actor, director and playwright.

Review: «...Jilinsky's 'The Joy of Acting' could not have appeared at a more opportune time. For those of us who are exploring relationship between Stanislavsky and Mikhail Chekhov, this book is crucial. It contains a quality all too rare in our profession - Love... Beginning with its title, (it) reads as a simple reminder of the theatre's soul.» (Robert Ellerman, Artistic Director, The Cactus Theatre, Chicago)
«The material in this collection of exercises is an accurate and carefully recorded description of the work as Jilinsky designed it for his students.» (Mary Hunter Wolf, former Broadway director and executive of the American Theatre Wing; presently President, Center for Theatre Techniques in Education - ACES)
«Für den Akteur sind die vielen praktischen Anleitungen ein Weg, die in Schauspielkursen gewonnenen Fähigkeiten privat zu trainieren und zu vertiefen. Der Theaterhistoriker hingegen wird in dem äußerst klar geschriebenen Werk Jilinskys die Weiterentwicklung der Lehren Stanislawskys verfolgen können.» (Sabine Lenk, Duisburg)
