About this title

Complete with photographs, this book examines the sleeping habits of twelve animals in their native environments, including the woodchuck and lobster, in relation to their ability to survive the world in which they live.

From Booklist:

Gr. 3-6. After stating the universal need for complete rest or sleep for "nature's creatures--from the huge 150-ton blue whale to the tiny pharaoh ant," Matero briefly explains sleep's benefits. The 12 clearly written chapters that follow discuss the behavior and sleep habits of individual species and, through these examples, the many types of rest. Some species, such as the woodchuck, hibernate in winter; the rattlesnake also experiences torpor and estivation. Young elephants nap lying down; the adults sleep standing up. Other species discussed include the black bear, brown bat, hummingbird, lobster, frog, and human being. Colorful photographs illustrate the text. Written for an older audience than most books on the subject, this will be a useful addition to many science collections. Carolyn Phelan
