A primarily financial report citing expenses and income of the state prison in Maine, with a numerical account of the amount of prisoners and of the various crimes for which they were interred. Preceded by a short piece by Joel Miller, discussing briefly his beliefs in how a prison should be run, highlighting the importance of education and moral improvement against recidivism, and discussing the limited, if any, benefits that corporal punishment and solitary confinement have on disobedient prisoners. GOOD condition. Small circular spot of old red wax on the front page, with paper adhered to it. Horizontal and vertical fold creases present. Minor foxing. Bookseller Inventory # 008807
