156pp. Original blue cloth. Bookplate of Douglas Fairbanks. The politician and statesman Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (1897-1977) first gained international prominence through his work at The League of Nations, where he gained a reputation for sincerity and diplomatic skill. Between 1935 and 1938 he was foreign minister in Chamberlain's Conservative government, finally resigning in protest at the latter's attempt to appease Mussolini. In Churchill's War Government he was war minister before returning to the Foreign Office. After the war he was deputy leader of the Conservatives and succeeded Churchill as prime minister in 1955. The Suez crisis of 1956, in which he sponsored an Anglo-French intervention in Egypt, precipitated a breakdown in his health and he resigned the following year. He signs the FFEP, "Inscribed for Doug / in friendhip and best wishes from Anthony May 1976.". Bookseller Inventory # JC2783
