About this title

Alice the mischievous cat escapes from her third-story apartment and makes her way to an antique store filled with all kinds of wonderful, fascinating objects.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- A continuation of the adventures of the curious cat first featured in The Third-Story Cat (Little, 1987). Once again, the illustrations are captivating, impressionistic paintings that convey mood and atmosphere as well as action. Alice is particularly well drawn and convincing, with a lively personality that shines through clearly. Baker's ability to capture and crystallize the essential feline quality of independence is evident in her text as well, for she repeatedly notes that ``no meant nothing to Alice.'' Human characters, especially the cat's young owner, Annie, are less successfully drafted and occasionally static compared to the graceful portrayal of Alice. Oddly enough, the text seems to be affected by the same kind of internal inconsistency as its shifts from the smooth and appealing depiction of Alice's interest in the world around her to an unlikely escapade in which she prevents an elderly shopkeeper from being bilked by a dishonest customer. These criticisms are, however, mere quibbles. The improbable plot and occasional awkwardness of the illustrations do not detract seriously from the considerable charm of this attractive book. Cat lovers everywhere will enjoy meeting, or becoming reacquainted with, The Antique Store Cat . --Lisa Dennis, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
