Description:

London: Hooper & Wigstead No. 212 High Holborn; Stockdale, Picadilly. New Edition. complete in 8 volumes, including the Supplement volume. Undated but several plates dated 1784 or earlier. These volumes presumed issued serially about 1784 to 1787, with the preface to Vol. VIII being dated 13 September 1787. 11.5 x 9 inches. Bound in medium brown half calf and marbled paper boards, the leather very desiccated and with disintegration at the spine heads and tails and at the corners. With much rubbing to the paper boards. Front board of Vol. VIII nearly detached. Some other volumes with very tender hinges. Several pages in each volume considerably browned. Additionally some intermittent browning, foxing, damp-staining and offsetting. The foxing ranges from almost non-existent to light to moderate. The 160 page preface to the work in volume 1 and its addenda include comments on castles, monasteries, architecture, Domesday Book and druidical monuments. The county index follows and continues in the subsequent volumes, detailing much interesting information regarding the antiquities of each county. Engraved vignette title-pages, frontispieces, half-page county maps, and engraved plates (many folding). A few of the county maps are hand-colored. The fold-out map at the beginning of Vol. 7, An Index Map to the Antiquities of England and Wales Shewing the Situation of Every Building Described in this Work, is immensely clean and free of tears, indeed almost pristine. Handsome 20th century B&W bookplate of the American character actor Edward Everett Horton to the front pastedowns. A Fair Only copy. Worthy of rebinding and conservation; priced accordingly. With thanks to NBA for the following biographical note: "Grose [1731-1791], an antiquary and travel writer, sought to provide his audience with the fullest experience possible, peppering his works with many detailed historical notes and remarks on all subjects treated." Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory #
