About this Item

"Par Maistre Jehan Duvet, iadis Orsevre des Rois, Francois premier de ce nom, & Henry deuxieme. Lyon, 1561." A Facsimile of the original edition, published by the Eugrammia Press (London, 1962). Folio, bound in quarter red morocco and printed boards. 47 leaves, printed one-side only on all-rag Atlas mould made paper. Illustrated with full-page collotype reproductions of the original 23 copper engravings by Duvet. Limited to 735 copies. A fine copy. A facsimile reprint of one of the landmarks in the history of book illustration, originally printed by Jean de Tournes, the greatest of all Lyonese printers, and illustrated by the King's jeweler, Jean Duvet. "It is a reminder of the original connection between the goldsmith's art and the engraver's, and the illustrations are indeed jewel-like in their quality and brilliance. Their rich pattern covers the whole page.Duvet has been called one of the first of the modern illustrators because he interpreted his text and was not content to translate it into images."
