About this title

Synopsis:

The Appalachian Trail is the longest continuously marked footpath in the world. It is the result of the hard work and determination of thousands of hands, mostly volunteer, whose dedication made it a reality in the 1920s and 30s, and who have since continued to maintain it. Now, for the first time, photographer Michael Warren and author Sandra Kocher have captured, through word and picture, the varied character, history and beauty of this 2,000 mile trail which runs down the Appalachian Mountains from Main to Georgia. This narrow corridor of open country and wilderness is notable for its accessibility as it spans fourteen states. Its proximity to densely populated areas makes it an especially meaningful part of America's recreational space, as was originally envisioned by its founders. Over a period of several years, Michael Warren has photographed numerous locations along the Trail, documenting its moods and seasons. Eighty-six of his most striking photographs were chosen for inclusion in APPALACHIAN TRAIL. They visually tell the story of the Trail as it follows the ridges and valleys of the Appalachians southward from Mt. Katahdin, Maine, to Springer Mountain in Georgia. Sandra Kocher's text gives a concise overview of the Trail's history, construction and purpose. Her personal anecdotes evoke in the trail enthusiast that familiar "I've been there!" feeling. Together, the photographs and text form a lasting tribute to this special place enjoyed by thousands of hikers, backpackers, through-hikers or those just out for an afternoon walk. For those who have tread its footway, this book is a visual toast - a celebration of some of the most previous memories to be gathered in a lifetime. For those unfamiliar with the Appalachian Trail, it is a calling - drawing upon the human need to "experience the primeval," as founder Benton MacKaye often described it.
