About this title

Synopsis:

This comprehensive text offers an effective and easy-to-follow coverage of the fundamentals of applied mathematics and their role in engineering analysis. Each topic is presented in great detail and accompanied by a large number of thoroughly worked-out examples, as well as several related exercises. Engineering applications, ranging from mechanical and electrical to structural systems are greatly stressed and integrated throughout the book.

Highlights include:

A detailed coverage of elemental and basic laws leading to mathematical models of dynamic systems (Ch. 1).

Derivation of the mathematical models of most physical systems under consideration to familiarize the reader with the proper laws and engineering terminology.

A thorough presentation on linear algebra and matrix computations (Ch. 7 – 9 ).

Complete discussion of conformal mappings and their engineering applications (Ch. 14).

Extensive coverage of probability and statistics and applications ranging from quality control to random vibrations (Ch. 15).

About the Author:

Dr. Ramin Esfandiari is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, M.A. in Applied Mathematics, and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (Optimal Control Theory), all from the University of California, Santa Barbara. After serving as faculty of mathematics at University of Southern California (USC) and CSULB, he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department in 1989.

He has authored several refereed research papers in high quality engineering and scientific journals including Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Optimal Control Applications and Methods, and ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics. He also co-authored (with Dr. H.V. Vu) the book ‘Dynamic Systems: Modeling and Analysis’, McGraw-Hill, 1997.

Professor Esfandiari is the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards including Meritorious Performance and Professional Promise Award, TRW Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship Award, and the Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award (2000-2001).
