About this title

Synopsis:

Teenage boys, Jacko, Jesse, and Archie spend their days goofing around, trying to beat one another in swimming races. For some reason, Archie can't seem to relax and have fun with his friends. Born in a community where he knew he was tied to his land, customs and spirit, that was who he was and where he would remain. Why did he have feelings of restlessness and uncertainty? Archie yearned for something deeper, more tangible. He realised he was different; his passion was for Jesse, not for girls. Knowing how people would react, Archie has no choice but to keep this quiet, even to his ill mother. After her early death, Archie struggles to come to terms with his loss and feels alone until he meets Kirra, who he finds solace in. Like Archie, Kirra dreams to move away and make something of herself one day. Unfortunately, her responsibility as the eldest child ties her down in many ways. Do they have the courage to leave their past behind? Is a new place really what they want?

About the Author:

Joan Westerman grew up in the post war era in Newcastle, Australia. Her earliest memories were forged by the seaside, and indeed the sea was in her blood. As a child in a large family, Joan felt isolated from her older siblings, who were all so different. As an adult, her teaching career took her to many rural and city locations, where she experienced friendship and a sense of belonging. Joan has now retired to a small seaside community, where she resides happily with her partner.
