Synopsis: Collects contemporary drawings, plans, and paintings that depict Soviet architecture of the 1920s through the 1950s
From Library Journal:
This is a formalist review of the vast classicizing state building programs under Joseph Stalin from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s. The authors, both architects and historians, can appreciate the vast and rich formal qualities of their subject apart from the political horror of which it was the official face. The compelling illustrations, both recent photographs and early photographs or drawings (as many projects were unrealized), convey the sense of scale, richness of materials, and presence that are the hallmarks of the style. The translated text reads smoothly and will serve general audiences very well. A welcome addition to the many titles on earlier, revolutionary constructivist arts in the historical Soviet Union.
