About this Item

Condition: Volume I: Very Good. Volume II: Very Good. A classic in the annals of arctic exploration. Funded by the Geographical Society of New York as well as the Smithsonian Institution, Dr. Kane was ordered by the Secretary of the Navy in 1852 to conduct an expedition to the Arctic seas in search of Sir John Franklin. Setting sail from New York on May 30, 1853, the party made for Greenland, taking 18 days to reach Newfoundland. There, after taking on fresh beef and a noble team of Newfoundland dogs, the ship headed for Greenland. What follows in the two volumes is a marvelous, non-scientific account (over 900 pages of very readable-size type) in which Dr. Kane relates their adventures for the next three years, conflicts with storms and ice, with whales and bears, with natives, with warmth and well as hostility. The threat of death is constant. More than 100 engravings based upon sketches by the author. The stereotype plates of "The First Grinnell Expedition" by Dr. Kane are included, as well as a fine steel frontispiece of Dr. Kane, as well as of Dr. Grinnell. Many steel engravings are full-page, most with tissue guards intact. The first folding map has a clean tear of four inches. The folding chart in Vol. II is VG. A striking set of books -- quarter-calf, with mottled yellow/black boards. Spines in G+ shape with gilt letters on red morocco titling, with volume numbers gilt on black morocco. Calf is scuffed normally, but with no cuts or tears. Corners bumped normally. Hinges starting to loosen in Volume 1. One steel engraving (with tissue guard) has come loose in Volume 1, but it is in place and undamaged. Volume II is very tight and in VG condition. A little browning, but text is clean with large type. Simply a beautiful and exciting set of travel books. Bookseller Inventory # H1182
