About this Item

First Edition. xxi, 323 pp. Original cloth. Spine rubbed, else Very Good, without dust jacket. '[Cooper] takes issue with the opinion of Bernays and others that Aristotle underrated Aristophanes and preferred Middle Comedy, and he argues convincingly in his excellent chapter on 'Aristotle and Aristophanes' not only that Aristotle was interested in Aristophanes and did not underestimate him in comparison with later comic poets, but that he recognized his genius and appraised his worth correctly' (Charles W. Peppler, review for The American Journal of Philology, Vol. 45, No. 3, 1924, pp. 293-296). The Tractatus Coislinianus is a 'statement of a Greek theory of comedy found in a 10th-century manuscript (published 1839) in the collection of Henri Charles du Cambout de Coislin. The treatment of comedy displays marked Aristotelian influence, even to the point of paralleling the model offered in the Poetics' (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Bookseller Inventory # 17220
