About this Item

[4], 76p, [4]. Contemporary full calf with marbled endpapers and richly gilt spine. A reprint of an edition first published by the noted French 16th century scholar Guillaume Bude (1467-1540). An early example of Greek printing at the Foulis Press. The first work in Greek at Glasgow appeared in 1743 which was followed by a number of editions, all which received ample assistance from the Professors of the university. From the Library of William Barrow Smythe (1809-1886) with bookplate. There is also a notation on the inside front blank that reads: "WBS C.C.C. 1827 Oxford". Records indicate that Mr. Smythe was a graduate of Corpus Christi College, Oxford and received his B.A in 1830. He apparently became a landowner in Ireland where he much later in life was subjected to a botched assassination attempt, as recorded by The Maryport Advertiser on April 6th, 1882, which claimed the life of his sister-in-law. There is an additional bookplate of Thomas Dampier, (1748-1812) Bishop of Ely and book collector underneath Smythes. His book collection, according to Seymour De Ricci p78, was purchased by the Sixth Duke of Devonshire in 1812. There are no markings in the book from the Chatsworth Library, so one can only conclude that it must have been sold as a duplicate at some point prior to1827, when Mr. Smythe purchased it. A marginal worm hole straight through the book, but not affecting the text. Hinges cracked, but holding firm. Small chip in the upper right side of the headband and some light foxing as well as slight dryness to the boards. A nicely printed book with an unusual provenance history. Gaskell #59.
